What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's Disease is a degenerative brain disease as a result of damaged brain cells. Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging, nor does it have a cure. Alzheimer's patient's symptoms will get worse over time.

What causes Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's disease is caused by abnormal build-up of proteins, called amyloid and tau, in and around brain cells.

Amyloid: deposits that form plaques around brain cells. 

Tau: deposits that form tangles in brain cells. 

What factors increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease?

  • Age 

  • Family History 

  • Down's Syndrome

  • Head injuries 

  • Cardiovascular Disease

  • And many more!

What are the Stages of Alzheimer's Disease?

Mild: Patients can still function independently but may forget familiar words or location of everyday objects. 

Moderate: Patients can act in unexpected ways, get agitated easily, and can have a challenging time expressing thoughts and performing basic tasks. 

Severe: Patients will experience considerable personality changes and will require extensive care. They can not respond to their environment, properly communicate, nor control movement.
